Outreach

The Charleston Breast Center is reaching out to all women in our community through outreach and education.

The Charleston Breast Center has initiated and implemented critically important community outreach and education programs that provide breast healthcare services for women throughout the Lowcountry and coastal communities, regardless of their ability to pay.   Women who are uninsured must often make hard choices between either getting breast cancer detection services and falling behind on basic living expenses or not getting these services at all.  But the longer they wait, the less chance they will have at a cure and the more severe the treatment.

To help alleviate these problems with the uninsured and underinsured, the Center has secured grants and established collaborative relationships with community organizations.

Your help is greatly appreciated to support and expand these critical programs. Donate here!

The following programs, projects, and accomplishments have taken place:

  • Screening and diagnostic mammograms have been provided for over 7,000 women, many of whom are medically underserved.

  • Community outreach and education programs have grown, providing help through other community organizations such as My Sister’s House, YWCA of Charleston, Crisis Ministries, The Palmetto Project, Fetter Clinic, Sea Island Health Care Centers, the Wellness House on Johns Island, Harvest Free Medical Clinic, St. Paul's Medical Group and many others.

  • The CBC has received Best Chance Network (BCN) designation by the American Cancer Society and SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).  The BCN program is funded by the CDC, as well as state and federal funds.  Its goal is to reduce mortality from breast and cervical cancer among medically underserved women in SC.

  • The Witness Project®, a national program to educate and promote breast health awareness in the underserved African American population, has been taken into the surrounding communities and churches with much success.

  • Multidisciplinary conferences are held weekly involving surgical, medical and radiation oncologists as well as radiologists, pathologists, nurse navigators and clinical trial nurses who donate their time to discuss the best treatment options for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.

  • The CBC greatly appreciates grant funding from the American Cancer Society, the Avon Foundation, Women Making A Difference and the Komen Foundation to continue these programs to reach so many women in the Lowcountry.
